It is not easy to find a good car seat for your child. All parents want a very safe, comfortable and easy to use car seat but there are actually other criteria to consider when buying a car seat for your child.
First of all, make sure that the size of the car seat is right for your child and that it will fit your car. A good car seat also has to be easy to install in your car without compromising your child's safety. Make sure the car seat has adequate and easy-to-fasten restraints for the child.
There are different kinds of car seats on the market. Choosing the appropriate car seat depends on the age of your child.
The infant rear-facing car seats are for babies under one year old (or under 20 pounds), although experts advise to keep babies in a rear-facing car seat to the limit specified by their car seat instructions. Rear-facing car seats are designed to absorb crash forces by reducing head and neck injuries in the case of a car crash. These seats can be used as portable seats thanks to their carrying handle. The rear-facing car seat must never be used if an air-bag is present!
The forward-facing car seats can be used for children between 20 and 40 pounds (or more for some models). They are obviously bigger than the rear-facing car seats and do not have a carrying handle, since they are designed to stay in the car most of the time.
The convertible car seats can be used for infants to face the rear of the car, and for toddlers to face the front of the vehicle. They can therefore be used from birth up to 40 pounds (over 60 on some models).
The high-back booster/harness are used after the forward-facing car seat. They lift the child up so the seat belt lies across his/her pelvis and chest to insure maximum protection during a car crash.
Don't forget that the best and safest car-seats are the ones which are used properly according to the manufacturer's instructions!
